Trout Fishing Regulations in Greece
Greece's mountain rivers are home to one of Europe's most prized wild trout populations. If you're planning a fly fishing trip to Greece, here's everything you need to know about the rules, seasons, and how to fish responsibly.
The Legal Framework
Recreational and sport fishing in Greece is governed by Presidential Decree 373/85, Presidential Decree 99/03, and EU Regulation 1967/2006. Under Greek law, recreational fishing is defined as fishing for leisure or sport only — not for commercial purposes or income.
Closed Season
Trout fishing is prohibited from November 1st to February 15th of the following year.
This closed season protects trout during their spawning period, allowing wild populations to reproduce naturally. Fishing during this period is a criminal offence.
Size & Bag Limits
- Minimum size: Trout must be at least 20 cm (approx. 8 inches) in length. Any trout below this size must be released immediately and carefully.
- Daily bag limit: Each angler may keep a maximum of 3 fish per day, or a total weight of 2 kg (approx. 4.4 lb), whichever is reached first.
Permitted Methods
- Fishing with a rod and line
- Fly fishing with artificial flies ✅
- Greek law does not currently restrict hook type or number — unlike many other European countries
Prohibited Methods
The following are strictly forbidden:
- Spearfishing in rivers and lakes ❌
- Nets of any kind ❌
- Cast nets ❌
- Fishing from boats or floating vessels ❌
- Use of explosives ❌
- Use of electric devices that stun or kill fish ❌
- Use of toxic, narcotic or corrosive substances ❌
- Sale or commercial trade of wild trout — it is illegal to buy or sell wild-caught trout in Greece. If you see wild trout on a taverna menu, it has been caught illegally. ❌
Penalties
Violations of these regulations are punishable by:
- Imprisonment from 5 months to 3 years
- Fines of up to €15,000
Enforcement is the responsibility of the Forestry Service and the Greek Police.
Practical Information for Visiting Anglers
Do I need a fishing licence?
Greece currently does not require a paid fishing licence for recreational freshwater fishing. However, you must comply with all regulations above. Local restrictions may apply in certain areas — always check with the local Forestry Office before fishing a new river.
Where can I fish for wild trout in Greece?
Greece's mountain rivers hold exceptional wild trout populations. However, we deliberately do not publish specific river locations — responsible fly fishing tourism requires proper management infrastructure to be in place first. Contact us and we'll be happy to discuss the current situation and future opportunities.
Is there a fly fishing guide service in Greece?
Greece currently has no certified fly fishing guides — a gap the Astraeus Club is actively working to address. If you're planning a trip, feel free to contact us for advice.
Catch & Release culture in Greece
Greece is still developing a catch & release culture. As a visiting angler, you can make a real difference by practicing full catch & release and setting an example for local fishermen.
Why This Matters
Wild trout are an indicator species — their presence signals clean, healthy water. Greece's mountain rivers have exceptional natural potential for sustainable fly fishing tourism. But this requires protecting what remains.
The Astraeus Fly Fishing Club is Greece's only national association dedicated exclusively to wild trout protection and fly fishing. We monitor rivers, report illegal fishing, and advocate for stronger conservation laws.
